How to Save Mother Earth

By David Clark (Pryderi)

What can we do as normal everyday people to save Mother Earth?  She nourishes us, she supplies us wit vast but exhaustible resources.  No matter what it is, it will run out.  Except for maybe two things, Wind and the Sun.   The Sun rises every day whether we would like it to or not.  The wind blows everyday, and it seems it always blows the hardest when you just got your hair done.

A funny thing I was told once was that, that item was "Man Made."  Nothing is Man Made.  Everything that Man makes is made from something found in Nature.  Whether it's a chemical, Steel, Rubber, Cork.  You name it, it came from Nature.  And those things that are supposed to be man made, like plastic, and other sorts of items, they are a byproduct of more than one item found in nature, therefore they can't be man made.  All resources that this Mother Earth provides could one day be non-existent.

There are many things e can do around the house to help save Mother Earth.  There are many things we can do outside the home to save Mother Earth.  Many of these things are right beneath our noses.  Alternative Energies, Recycling, Eating Less, Drinking Less.  My first suggestion is to cut your portions at meal times in half.  You're not going to die, trust me.  If you're hungry later down the evening or afternoon, have a piece of fruit, or a carrot or other vegetable.  Portions in this country have gone sky high, from double burgers to triple burgers, from a single plate for dinner to all you can eat buffets.  Why?  Because we can and have a reasoning that we will never have a food shortage.  Well guess again.  The population of this world is so rapidly growing that within the next 20-40 years we will be seeing food shortages.  Do what you can to grow your own garden; every little bit really does help.  If 1000 people can grow a garden with enough vegetables to feed their family for the span of the winter, food stores will increase again.  What if 10,000 people did it?  Could you imagine what would happen if every person in the world grew a garden that could support their family during a 6 month period.  World Hunger could be dramatically reduced.  Granted, not everyone has a yard large enough for a garden, but guess what, a lot of vegetables can be grown in pots now days.  If growing vegetables in  pots, it may be necessary to supplement natural ground nutrients with prepackaged plant foods that are all natural.  But yes, you can grow vegetables indoors.

Alternative Energies are another way we can save Mother Earth.  Albeit, some of the alternative energies are way too costly for initial setup by the average person, but there are still alternative energies we can all use.  Passive solar energy to heat your house during the winter, Southern window shades should be kept open during the day to help heat your home.  Candles can help heat your home.  Beeswax of course, Paraffin candles are a by product of oil.  It is best to avoid them, although if that's all you have, candles work wonders.  Oil Lamps, two or three placed around each room that is occupied during the winter can dramatically heat your house as well.  And lamp oil is much cheaper than natural gas or propane.  I use oil lamps to help heat our house one winter and reduced my gas bill that winter by almost half.  How's' that grab ya?  Just remember to put them out before you go to sleep.  You can also set your thermostat down 5 - 10 degrees at night while you are sleeping too.  Wind generation for electricity is another option however everyone having or owning a wind generator for electricity is cost prohibitive in this day and age.  Hopefully soon prices for these fantastic gizmos will come down.  Support your local electricity supplier on switching to wind generation.  There are many wind farms now throughout this country and they are saving people hundreds of dollars every year and in turn using a resource that is renewable.  For those of you who are lucky enough to own a generator, I do hope it is a diesel one.  Not only are the engines more dependable and durable and economical, you can make your own fuel for them too.  It's called Bio Diesel and the process for making it is rather simple.  I'll go into that some other time.

Using alternatives can be fun and down right educating.  Make your own bread instead of buying it.  It's rather simple to make.  There are many different recipes on the internet, in cook books at your local library.  You can even can your own vegetables.  Freezing vegetables is another alternative too.  However you should consult a freezing vegetables book, as each vegetable must be prepared differently before freezing.  Freezing meats, drying meats, Seafood is another alternative too.  Do you know it takes approximately 3 - 4 ears of corn to make one can of canned corn?  Do you also know that canned vegetables are not as high in nutritional value as fresh food.  Over production and cross breeding for easier corn to manage and grow has reduced it nutritional value.  The same thing goes for many of the mass produced vegetables today.  For example, take a honest to goodness home grown tomato and compare it to a tomato bought at the store that was mass produced or grown in a hot house.  The flavors are extraordinarily different.  The home grown tomato has a more succulent taste.  It has more vitamins and phytochemicals in it.  (Phytochemicals are not bad for you; each tomato contains over 30,000 different phytochemicals that help cure diseases.)  Tomatoes have even been medically proven to re-grow damaged or destroyed livers.  Imagine that.

Saving Mother Earth involves many many things.  And through this article and the pages I type I will show you how to do this without digging deep into your pockets or checkbooks.  This months article does not reveal much, I am saving the good stuff for later just so you will come back to see me.  Take an hour this month before my nest installment and reflect on ways that you can help save Mother Earth.  In time, it will be second nature, you just need a guiding hand to help you through this.  In time, I will teach all that you need to know to help save our precious planet that many people think will supply us with inexhaustible resources.  Together we can make a difference.  Share these ideas with your friends, teach them what I teach you.

An old Native American saying is that:

"We do not inherit the Land from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children"

I look forward to seeing you all again next month.  If you have a suggestion for me, or would like me to cover certain things, drop me an email at SabbatsGrove@aol.com with Saving Mother Earth in the subject line.

Merry Meet, Merry Part and Merry Meet Again

Blessed Be
